Gay Books in Alabama, Fat Bear Week, and the Laziest Citizen Competition Amber’s News Briefs October 22 2023

When you hear there’s an organization called Clean Up Alabama, if you’re like me, you’re thinking, it’s about time!

That is until you go to their website and read…

Clean Up Alabama mission

In the past few years, many Alabama libraries have been stocking their shelves with books intended to confuse the children of our communities about sexuality and expose them to material that is inappropriate for them.

And this group decided that the book “Read Me A Story, Stella,” should be added to a list of potentially sexually explicit books.

They made this decision by doing a search for the word “Gay.”

There are no gay characters in this book that is about a pair of siblings reading books together and building a doghouse.

The reason that the book was designated unacceptable is because the author’s name is Marie-Louise Gay.

Yes, the book was blacklisted not because of gay characters, but because the word Gay appeared on the cover.

This book was one of 233 titles slated to be reviewed and potentially moved. However, after internal and public criticism that the list targeted the LGBTQ community, the process was halted.

Someone needs to clean up Clean Up Alabama.

Where’s Mr. Clean when you need him?

I never thought I’d see an endurance contest that I could possibly compete in… But I had never heard of the challenge to earn the title of “Laziest Citizen.” In Brezna, Montengro

Montenegro is there tucked between Albania, Croatia and not only Bosnia but Herzegovina as well.

Competitors are accommodated at a resort, where they are given three meals a day and have the right to go to the toilet every eight hours.

Their health is monitored, and their only responsibility is to remain lying down. Standing or sitting results in immediate disqualification.

The contest was first held in 2001 to poke fun at the Balkan stereotype that Montenegrins are lazy.

Everyone in Brezna must have fallen asleep, because the last report we could find on this year’s event was from September 18. Thirty days had past and only five of the original 21 entrants were still in bed.

The person declared the laziest citizen receives 1,000 euros and a jar of salve for their bedsores.

Two weeks ago, we told you about Fat Bear Week

at Alaska’s Katmai National park and Preserve.  The event is held to celebrate the success of brown bears in preparing for winter hibernation by gaining weight. People log in and watch videos of bears, voting on their favorite.

This year’s winner was Grazer.

Also known as Bear 128 who received 108,321 votes defeating her closest competitor by almost 80 thousand votes.   There’s no truth to the rumor that Grazer is now being considered to run for Speaker of the House.
